The senator representing Anambra North Senatorial zone, Sen.Tony Nwoye, has called on the Federal government to give succor to the people of Anambra north constituency, due to the hardship brought to them by the deplorable condition of roads in the area.
Nwoye made the call over the weekend during an on-the-spot assessment of some impassable critical roads under his constituency, including; Onitsha–33 Junction, Nkwelle to Aguleri, Ayamelum and Adani Federal Expressway.
The lawmaker raised his concerns for the farmers in the areas, describing it as “completely impassable” and a major source of hardship for residents and farmers across seven local government areas in Anambra State.
Addressing journalists, Sen. Nwoye stated, “this important grade A expressway was constructed in 1981 by the Shehu Shagari led administration through facilitation of Dr. Alex Ekwueme of blessed memory (the then Vice-President).
“What we witnessed today is quite an eye sore, the road is completely cut off, impassable and in the worst condition. The people of Anambra North Senatorial district cannot access their communities and residences again via this road,” he added.
The visibly disturbed lawmaker lamented the condition, saying “do you know that the people of Ayamelum LGA are in the worst situation because of this road as they cannot access their communities and farmland again. This road leads to many agrarian communities, oil wells and refinery that all collectively contribute to gross domestic product (GDP).”
Recall that the Senate had passed a motion sponsored by Senator Tony Nwoye in July 2023 for urgent rehabilitation and construction of the road, after which Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) had approved for the award, and the ministry of works had commenced the process of award before it was halted.
Appealing to the federal government, Nwoye said “I know that if the Minister of Works Sen. Dave Umahi comes here and see the condition of this road, he will not be able to sleep.”
“I therefore call on our dear leader, President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Works, to urgently repair and rehabilitate the road so as to alleviate the sufferings of commuters and residents.” he said.
The senator stressed that beyond the temporary palliatives, the priority must remain the award and full reconstruction of the road to permanently end the suffering of his constituents.
